Welcome to Dinokeng

Just north-east of Johannesburg and Tshwane lies the vibrant and warm region of Dinokeng, where the world's largest diamond was discovered. Today the area is sparkling with natural, cultural and historical attractions, a place where South Africans and their visitors enjoy the outdoors and the history and culture of Africa.

The name Dinokeng is derived from the languages of the baTswana and baPedi people who traditionally inhabited the area. Meaning "a place of rivers", Dinokeng lies in the catchment area of two rivers that flow into the Olifants and Limpopo rivers and on to the Indian Ocean. In African culture, river sources have sacred significance and their confluences are believed to hold healing powers.

Dinokeng is in the north-eastern quadrant of Gauteng province. It's very easy to reach from Johannesburg (45 minutes) or Tshwane (15 minutes) on the N1 or the N4, and it's well traversed by good quality roads once you're there.

Dinokeng has many game reserves and conservancies, which are being linked together and restocked with game with the potential to form a large Big Five game reserve in future.

Against this natural backdrop, Dinokeng offers a rich history and culture allure. The area's history is of particular significance to the Tswana, Pedi, Afrikaans, Ndebele, English and Tsonga-speaking people, many of whom can trace their roots back to the ancient bush and rolling grasslands.

Dinokeng is a Blue IQ initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government to establish a premier tourist destination close to urban Gauteng. The project aims to promote economic growth, job creation and social upliftment through conserving and developing the historical, natural and cultural heritage of the area. It also aims to enable many South Africans to experience tourism for the first time.

Dinokeng is symbolised by the calabash - representing hospitality and prosperity of the region as an outdoor recreation destination, as a hub of significant natural, cultural and historical attractions, as a place of tourism growth and new investment, and for the social upliftment and economic development of the local communities.
